How Old Are You In High School? (with table)


The term “high school” in the United States refers to a student that is in grades 9, 10, 11, or 12. Students in high school are between 14 and 18 years of age. In 9th grade they are 14-15 years of age. In 10th grade they would be 15-16 years of age. During 11th grade they are 16-17 years old and in 12th grade they are typically 17-18 years old.

Once a student completes, or graduates, from 8th grade the student moves on to a new level of schooling called high school.

Usually this also means attending a new building called a “High School” where they will complete grades 9-12.

How Old Are 9th Graders

Students in 9th grade are often also called freshman as they are completing their first year of high school.

The age of a 9th grader is 14-15 years.

How Old Are 10th Graders

Students that are in 10th grade are also called sophomores.

These students are completing their second year of high school.

The age of a 10th grader in high school is 15-16 years.

It is during this time that most students will complete driver education courses in order to get driver’s license in the United States.

How Old Are 11th Graders

Students that are in 11th grade are called juniors.

They are completing their third year of high school and the typical age
of 11th graders is 16-17 years.

How Old Are 12th Graders

Students that are in 12th grade are also called seniors.

These students are completing their fourth year of high school and 17 to 18 years of age.

They are in their final year of high school and at the end of the school year they will have a graduation ceremony to mark the completion of high school.
