Students don’t have to do homework. There is no law in place of any kind in any school that says students have to do homework. Will there be repercussions of some sort? Yes, you may get a bad grade and get in trouble with your parents. You also won’t learn what was intended!
If you are a student then I strongly suggest you do your homework!
Completing homework is going to help you get a passing grade because homework is practice for the big test (summative assessment) at the end of the unit.
With that being said I, a teacher, will admit that you don’t have to do homework. But…
Nothing is going to happen to you legally.
You won’t get a fine and you can’t go to jail.
What Happens If You Don’t Do Homework?
If you don’t do your homework you can still get in trouble though.
One thing that may happen is your parents are contacted which could land you in trouble with them.
The teacher can also give you a detention (read this article about detentions I wrote) during the school day or after school ends.
Probably the worst thing that can happen is you aren’t learning by skipping homework.
If you skip the homework then you aren’t going to be prepared for the assessments!
Does Homework Matter?
Homework does matter very much. And not just for your grade.
Students also learn discipline by completing homework.
They learn that sometimes you will have to do things that you don’t want to because the end goal is what’s important.
School success often leads to life success.
Completing homework and being disciplined in order to learn and have a goal in mind is a huge benefit that is sometimes overlooked these days.
